I'm just so sad, a poem

Morning coffee,

same couch,

same quiet.

Tears just come now,

no warning,

no reason I can name.

Only this...

I'm just so sad.

Not a metaphor.

Not a bigger thought

waiting behind it.

Just four words,

sitting on my chest

like the coffee going cold.

All I want

is one more text.

One more call.

One more hug.

One more anything.

I'd take any of it.

I'd take all of it.

I'd take a version of it

smaller than I ever noticed

when I had it.

I miss him so much

it doesn't fit in the word "miss."

It just sits here,

heavy,

with the coffee,

with the couch,

with me.

I let them stay.

I don't fight them down anymore.

Some mornings

that's the whole poem.

That's the whole day.
